WASHINGTON, D.C. – 2023 was a busy year for Guam’s freshman Congressional Delegate Jim Moylan (R- GUAM). From navigating several Speaker of the House races to helping Guam recover from super typhoon Mawar, Moylan was busy in congress. Guam News Now sat down with Moylan and shares his legislative priorities for 2024.
“We went through some interesting times as freshmen from the start,” said Rep. Moylan.
Looking back on his first year in congress, Congressman Moylan has sponsored and introduced legislation, signed onto bills that eventually became law and most importantly, advocate for Guam.
“I’m also glad for working with our administration back home and our private enterprises back home representing organizations like the Guam Chamber of Commerce, Guam realtor’s association, Guam Contractors Association and the directors from Guam that have come to DC to come knock on doors to echo the same message so we’re all together,” said Rep. Moylan.
With a year under his belt, Moylan is confident they have a good system going on in DC.
“We have a better opportunity next year to ensure Guam’s voice is heard and get the assistance we need for Guam and for the nation too,” said Rep. Moylan.
Looking ahead for 2024, Moylan has a full agenda.
“Our population will most likely increase with the increase in military presence,” said Rep. Moylan. “A lot of contractors will be coming on out; a lot of opportunities on the island. We’re hoping our local residents see these opportunities and want to stay on Guam and work on Guam. So our infrastructure needs to be strong to support their needs. We’re looking at working with FEMA, Department of Defense, for our power, for our water, for our roads, for our port and for our medical services too. So we have ideas in mind with these partners to move things forward in that light we still have storms that come to the island and we gotta make sure we’re ready and be strong enough to get back into it right away, to make sure our resilience is there for our nation, for our military, as well as for our local population.”
Another legislative priority for Moylan is including Guam in the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) for people impacted by radiation released during nuclear tests or careers in the uranium industry.
For the upcoming year, Moylan said they’ve got many things in the pipeline.
“We’ve got more things to come,” said Rep. Moylan. “This system we’ve got going on is really solid and we can defend our nation, defend our island and keep things safe.”
