WASHINGTON, D.C. – Patience for Russian President Vladimir Putin is running thin with President Donald Trump over Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched 200 drones and roughly 30 missiles on Saturday alone. It’s just the latest in a relentless offensive against Ukraine.
Now, President Donald Trump is dialing up the pressure on President Vladimir Putin — giving Moscow less than two weeks to make serious progress on ending its war in Ukraine or face serious consequences.
The conflict has dragged on for more than three and a half years. But now, Trump says Russia has just “10 or 12 days” to strike a peace deal or face sweeping penalties.
On July 14, President Trump gave Putin 50 days to reach a peace deal with Ukraine or else face severe tariffs.
In a sharp shift from his previously softer tone toward Putin, Trump warned Monday that the U.S. will hit Russia — and its trade partners — with massive “secondary tariffs.” Trump’s also threatening direct sanctions on Russia’s exports if there’s no movement toward peace.
“I’m disappointed in President Putin, very disappointed in him,” Trump said during his visit to Scotland. “So we’re going to have to look, and I’m going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number because I think I already know the answer to what’s going to happen.”
President Trump made clear he’s no longer interested in further talks with Putin and said a formal announcement on the new deadline could come as soon as Monday night or Tuesday.
