Guam to Move to COR 1 at Noon as Super Typhoon Bavi Approaches

Guam is expected to move to Condition of Readiness 1 at noon Sunday as Super Typhoon Bavi approaches the Mariana Islands.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Rear Adm. Brett Mietus anticipate placing Guam and the island’s military bases in COR 1 and Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 1 at 12 p.m.

At COR 1, destructive winds are possible within 12 hours.

Officials are urging residents to finish all storm preparations by Sunday afternoon and remain indoors once COR 1 takes effect until COR 4 is announced.

Anyone who believes their home may not be safe during the storm is being urged to go to an emergency shelter now.

Officials are also providing additional safety guidance for visitors. Tourists should remain inside their hotels during COR 1, preferably in interior areas away from windows and glass, and follow instructions from hotel staff.

Visitors are being warned not to walk, drive or leave their location during the storm. Beaches, cliffs and shoreline areas should also be avoided.

Officials said water rescue resources will not be staged near coastal areas because of dangerous conditions, and first responders may be unable to safely respond during the height of the storm.

Fire, ambulance and police services may also be limited, with emergency response delayed until conditions are safe.

Residents and visitors are advised to use flashlights instead of candles, stay away from floodwaters and downed power lines, prepare medications and other essential supplies, and charge electronic devices before possible power and communication outages.

Joint Task Force-Micronesia said it remains prepared to provide assistance if requested and is coordinating with local and federal partners.
