Guam Damage Assessments Set for Tuesday Morning as Key Roads Remain Blocked

Guam officials will begin island-wide damage assessments at first light Tuesday as residents remain under orders to stay indoors and off the roads.

Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero, Lieutenant Governor Joshua F. Tenorio and government agencies will conduct an initial windshield assessment of roadways, infrastructure, public facilities, utilities, debris, flooding and other hazards.

Officials said residents should remain home until Condition of Readiness 4 is announced. Limiting traffic will allow assessment teams and emergency crews to identify hazards, clear roads and restore essential services.

Several key roads remain blocked by storm damage.

A portion of Route 1 Marine Corps Drive from Shell East Agana to Alupang Pavilion is closed while crews clear debris.

Route 11, the Port Access Road, is also impassable because of storm debris. Reopening the road is a top priority because it provides access to the Port, fuel facilities and other infrastructure needed to move fuel, cargo and emergency supplies.

Joint Region Marianas will begin an active recovery phase at 6 a.m. Tuesday, as daylight allows damage assessments to begin.

Officials stressed that the recovery phase is not an all-clear. Installation facilities and base services will remain closed while assessments and restoration work continue.

Guam remains in Condition of Readiness 1, and residents are being told to remain indoors and off the roads until COR 4 is announced.ough flooded roads.
